I Listen to NPR

Although I already loved Dorothy Gambrell for her delightful webcomic Cat and Girl, I love her more still for this tote bag. I want it immediately. But like WHYY pledge drives, it’s here for a limited time: it’s only being sold until June 19th.

NPR tote bag, Cat and Girl, $17. You should probably still give money to WHYY, though. There’s a reason  their pledge drives are so brutal: they don’t have enough money.

No Need To Stay In The Lines

Do you long for the days when you could still color with crayons? I’m not talking about those nights at Sugar Mom’s…check out these rings! They’re sort of pricey, but you can COLOR with them!  Awesome.

Glamour Magazine wants to solve your beauty dilemmas on the cheap. Beauty tips include pouring dark beer into your hair and putting egg yolk on your face. Whatever, you already have it in your fridge, so what do you have to lose?

Perhaps this is Politically Incorrect, but it’s still entertaining.  In addition to showing you the way to coloring bliss, The Frisky tells you what you should wear during fashion week in cities around the world that aren’t New York, Paris or London.

The Frisky also points out recent fashion trends that mirror what was popular during the Great Depression. However, these aren’t frocks that look like they were pulled out of the Grapes of Wrath or inspired by those depressing Dust Bowl pictures. These are cute outfits with strong lines and lots of structure.

Lucky Magazine wants you to have some luck! Go, enter some of their contests before someone else does!

the coolest rugs on the planet

Simply put: It would appear that I have found them. Enjoy.

"the global warming rug"

"Das Rug"

"das rug"-- hey, it's honest!

"the felted river stone rug"

"the felted river stone rug"

"grand, grand splash rug"

…annnd my personal favorite I’ve decided that I cannot live without:

"the over easy egg rug"

"over easy egg rug"

I’ll be honest. I had no idea that the premier of Star Trek was going to be such a big deal. Apparently, it was a huge deal. Amongst those on the red carpet was Hayden Panettiere, who was rocking some new ink. Supposedly, Hayden had a tattoo of the word vivre - ‘to live’ in French, and has expanded upon it. I can’t quite make out what the entire tattoo says.  Can you?

Cosmo has compiled a list of 100 products that celebs swear by, while People.com has a slideshow featuring links to inexpensive options to ‘recreate the look.’

Also Paula Abdul performed last week on Idol, which I’d have to say was better than expected. However, BET points out, not many people actually want to see her make a comeback.  Do you?  Do you care?

Browmance

It seems that Michelle Obama’s eyebrows have gotten some bad reviews. I noticed that her arches were a bit high, but Glamour goes into more detail than that. That said, I am a HUGE threading fan.

After getting burned during a routine eye brow wax, I’ve been afraid of the hot, gooey stuff. My eyebrows tend to do this scary antler thing when they aren’t maintained, so au natural is not an option. When left to my own devices, I tweeze entirely too much. I always enlist the help of others for the brows.

Threading is more precise than waxing, and less painful. It’s sort of difficult to explain, but it reminds me of all of the levels in Cat’s Cradle that I could never get to. As in, it’s fascinating and intricate looking. NBC10 did a report on Thread Beauty Bar near Rittenhouse Square, which aids in explaining what exactly threading is. Threading is the best option if you take any acne medications or have sensitive skin.

I’ve gotten my eyebrows threaded in New York, London, really anywhere I can. Good places to get your eyebrows thread in Philly are few and far between.  Thread is one of the greats. I’m a fan.  You should be too.

American Apparel is wonderful since it doesn’t use sweatshops and all, but what’s up with them showing no love for the big girls? The Frisky says you can still wear these ’skinny’ fashions, even if you aren’t a size zero.

Lastly, I love a good Dutch bike. Apparently the NY Times does too. Their most recent article focuses on not looking like, well, a tool. There is a way to remain professional looking while pedaling down the street.

XOXO, GG.

In honor of it being gross and rainy, here are some scarves and hats that are on sale.  I mean, it’s not supposed to be winter anymore, but that doesn’t mean the temperature is cooperating. There’s this scarf (was $34.00, now $9.99) and hat (originally $28.00, now $6.99) from Urban, as well as this scarf (was $49.99 now $29.99) from Banana.

You can also head over to BlueFly.com for some more winter accessory sales.  Or, just check out my favorite part of the site, the pages dedicated to Gossip Girl.

Speaking of Gossip,  Lindsay Lohan has a video on eHarmony. Sort of. It’s weird. Watch it.

Also, there’s a video of fashion predictions from the 1930s regarding the year 2000. I’m just hoping it’s not staged like that time Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. I mean….what?

Baubles, Bangles and Beads

Want some accessories and sparkle without breaking the bank?  Glamour and Cosmo have some ideas for you. Glamour also has some ideas on what toenail polish you should get to go with these sandals. Since Easter was eight degrees colder than Christmas, I’ll keep my fingers crossed that the piggy toes can make their seasonal debut soon.

Since it’s April and there may be some more showers on the way, the New York Times did a feature on umbrellas.  They’re a welcome dash of color on a dreary day.  Just watch out for the Cartier ad on the side of the page, it likes to pop open.

It’s amazing what a difference the right makeup can make. Allure has put together a slideshow on how wearing makeup incorrectly can age you up to a couple of years. This brings me to my new fave, Bare Escentuals. I’d watched the infomercial and thought whatever, that stuff isn’t real.  However, when my sister started wearing it, I started thinking differently. It provides coverage and might actually improve your skin. Nice.

NY  Times photographer Bill Cunningham got some great pictures of Easter in NYC.  Cunningham, who has been taking shots since World War II, gives commentary to his pictures. Definitely worth watching.

Esquire’s list of Best Dressed Real Men has some Philly Flavor.

And while not exactly local, the show Britain’s Got Talent has had some amazing contestants as of late. I don’t want to give it away, so just watch this singer and these dancers.

Hanging With Your Peeps

It’s the weekend to hang out with your peeps. Yea, there will be seder dinners with mom and dad as well as easter egg hunts with the little cousins, but this weekend it’s about the sugary sweet peeps. These little Peeps, hand dipped in chocolate are almost too cute to eat.

The same website, Style.com also has this creepy cartoon that talks to you about fashion. She’s styled after Candy Pratt Price, who lays down the fashion law in her ‘Candycast.’ It’s ‘powered by’ Oddcast.  At least they know it’s weird.

Are you mean? Bad Girls Club is holding auditions in Philly. If you’re looking to get your 15 minutes of fame as a nasty girl, make sure you line up on April 18th.

Glamour has put together a list of spring essentials under $100. My personal faves out of this list are the aviators, and the ‘jerk umbrella’ from MoMa, which will definitely push everyone else off the sidewalk. Just something to think about as you make your way though the urban jungle.

No One Is Invincible

Reality has hit the Real Housewives of NYC! One showed that she wasn’t invincible, as she was laid off from her job as a buyer at Victoria’s Secret. Another Real Housewife faces assault charges after punching her boyfriend in the face.

I can’t get enough of the McDonald’s Filet O’Fish commercial.  Can you?

Estelle has a free song available for download on Crystal Light’s website.  You don’t even have to say that you’ll buy their products…even though I think diet drinks that will probably give me cancer are deeeelish.

Twitter was the buzzword in the mainstream media last week. The micro blogging site is growing by leaps and bounds, and is being utilized by reporters and citizen journalists alike.  Everyone seems to be tweeting, aka updating their twitter status. Will there be a backlash?

Last night’s American Idol episode made it clear that for the last contestant you should call 1-866-IDOLS-36 instead of the planned 1-866-IDOLS-13. The reasoning? American Idol usually reserves 12 phone lines, one for every finalist.  This year, there are 13 finalists.

The 13th consecutive phone line was apparently reserved for a phone sex hotline. The Hotline was allegedly disconnected before American Idol’s lines opened up. I hope you called or texted the right number if you were interested in casting a vote. I’m also wondering — how did the Phone Sex hotline let their users know that their number would not be in service?

A Tribute to Barbie

If she were real, with her perfectly matched accessories and impossibly shiny hair, you would probably hate her. You would wonder what kind of moisturizer she uses and how much does she pay for it.  You would swear that Ken is totally gay.  But since she isn’t real and was a classic yet potentially self-esteem damaging idol of every American girl’s childhood, why not give her some props?

The ever-evolving icon of American fashion, Barbie, is turning 50! To celebrate, top designers are making dresses for her to debut at New York Fashion Week.

Hollywood has been fixated on the image of Barbie for decades.  My favorite Barbie influenced characters are the deliciously evil ”Plastics” of Mean Girls.

If her tan and blonde is just too boring American college type of hot for you, check out these new lines of Barbie that are actually super hip in anyone’s eyes!

Another thing I appreciate about Barbie is that when she wears Juicy Couture, she doesn’t wear sweatpants and the label isn’t advertised in glitter across her ass. She wears an adorable dress that- believe it or not America -is JUST AS DESIGNER although the Juicy label is a small tag inside the garment.

Love her or hate her, you probably knew her for a time.  This blogger wants to know your fondest memories of Barbie.  Care to share?
