Sunshine Day
With the sunshine finally peeking out and temperatures rising, you might be inclined to throw on a sundress. Just make sure you don’t become a don’t. I’m open to a lot of different interpretations of things, but sun dresseses are not something to mess around with.
Recently, you may have been tempted by a good buy in a thrift shop, Salvation Army or Goodwill. If you’ve ever been tempted by a pair of shoes in one of these stores, but also a bit skeeved out because you pictured someone else’s sweaty feet inside of them…here’s how to disinfect your footwear.
Glamour magazine also has a list of the ‘50 Most Glamorous,’ which translates to powerful and stylish women that have made an impact. Love it.
Cosmo has put together a list of exercises to do in order to get whipped into shape like your favorite celebs.
If you need something to help pull you through until 5 o’clock, check out TopShop’s video podcast, as well as this necklace that they’re selling. Afterward, head on over to Net A Porter’s site to be inspired by brights for summer. For something a little more affordable, but also a little less bright…check out Alexander Wang at the Gap!
Giddy Up!
The Kentucky Derby took place this last weekend. Sure, there were a few horse races, but it’s really the hats that took center stage. NBC10 and the LA Times put together slideshows of the hats.
While it might not tell you how to recreate the over-the-top hats from the derby, the “Insider Tricks” section of the Beauty Blitz website does tell you how to recreate looks seen on red carpets as well as in magazines.
This section features Kristin Davis in an ad for Ahava Products. She looks gorgeous, and her look can be recreated using the products listed. You’ll notice not all the products used to recreate the look are from Ahava. However, as an aside…I LOVE Ahava Products.
Direct from the Dead Sea, this stuff is amazing. The hand cream isn’t greasy and makes your hands soft, even in on the coldest days. I’m an old lady….and being at the old age of 23, I was craving a bath with their bath salts. They’re a bit pricey, but I went in and took the purchase plunge because I trusted it would be magical. It was. So Glad I splurged.
I Still haven’t brought myself to splurge on jewelry. I do, however, accept donations. For those that are willing to splurge on Jewelry, Cartier just celebrated 100 years in America. Lots of sparkles on this red carpet.
A real gem came to town this past weekend. As previously blogged about, Lady Gaga played at the Electric Factory. Apparently she showed some lady parts? Or, at least she claims to have flashed her bits in this video. Can you see anything? Did you go to the show and see?
Baubles, Bangles and Beads
Want some accessories and sparkle without breaking the bank? Glamour and Cosmo have some ideas for you. Glamour also has some ideas on what toenail polish you should get to go with these sandals. Since Easter was eight degrees colder than Christmas, I’ll keep my fingers crossed that the piggy toes can make their seasonal debut soon.
Since it’s April and there may be some more showers on the way, the New York Times did a feature on umbrellas. They’re a welcome dash of color on a dreary day. Just watch out for the Cartier ad on the side of the page, it likes to pop open.
It’s amazing what a difference the right makeup can make. Allure has put together a slideshow on how wearing makeup incorrectly can age you up to a couple of years. This brings me to my new fave, Bare Escentuals. I’d watched the infomercial and thought whatever, that stuff isn’t real. However, when my sister started wearing it, I started thinking differently. It provides coverage and might actually improve your skin. Nice.
NY Times photographer Bill Cunningham got some great pictures of Easter in NYC. Cunningham, who has been taking shots since World War II, gives commentary to his pictures. Definitely worth watching.
Esquire’s list of Best Dressed Real Men has some Philly Flavor.
And while not exactly local, the show Britain’s Got Talent has had some amazing contestants as of late. I don’t want to give it away, so just watch this singer and these dancers.
Bling Bling
The Phillies had their ring ceremony, and those sparkly accessories sure are mesmerizing. If you want to keep up with the Mets vs Phils rivalry, be sure to check out this blog.
Denny’s is at it again. Free breakfast! With the order of a Grand Slam Breakfast, you can get a free Grand Slamwich, whatever that is.
Burn off the Grand Slam at Lucy’s in Olde City. Lucy’s is hosting Wii nights every Wednesday.
As you know, what’s on the runway doesn’t always translate to the walkway. And for something a bit more practical, TopShop has just opened up their first store stateside. Get a glimpse of some of their offerings.
OctoRing
I’ve mentioned before that I have a thing for octopus jewlery. More accurately, my boyfriend digs the cephalopods and I’ve twisted it into something a bit prettier for my own interests. Today, PW Style founder Tara sent me a link to some sweet octopus rings on Digby & Iona. The one pictured here has blue and black diamonds and is pretty pricey ($640!), but the versions without stones are closer to affordable at $250. There’s also a matching necklace. But you know how I feel about matchy-matchy.
Erin Go BRAAAGHhhhhh uh hey sorry about your shoes bro
There’s an Irish bar a block from my house on my route to the subway, so for the last couple of weekends I’ve been dodging screeching verge-of-vom co-eds dressed in green every other time I leave the house.
There’s just something about St. Patrick’s Day that’s so goddamn pathetic (at least, the parts that are ferried into my life via the Erin Express). The lightweight dudes that smell like vomit before 2pm. The embarrassing Irish-themed pick-up lines. The green Cat-in-the-Hat hats. The girls wearing the totally sexy green costumes, about 20% of whom look good in them and 80% of whom looked good in them four years and 25 pounds ago but are squeezing into them anyway, because hey, it’s St. Patrick’s Day!
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all in favor of large crowds and public drinking. I just prefer it to be caused by some sort of event. Election night? Awesome! The Phillies stuff? Awesome, except for how my friend got his car flipped (but it was all OK, he had riot insurance). St. Patrick’s Day never seems like a celebration, just a yearly excuse for all the people I disliked in high school to take over the city for a day, binge drink and wear blinky lights.
That said, I still think this silver-plated shamrock necklace by Philly-area etsy seller briguysgirls is really beautiful.
Philly artist featured on etsy
Philly cermaics artist Yasha Butler, of Old City’s the Clay Studio, is a featured seller on etsy’s front page today. There’s a short interview up on the site. Yay! Way to go, local artists!
I’m seriously liking the clean lines and palette of Butler’s jewelry and dinnerwares. Check out more at her etsy shop, yashabutler.
thanks, Philly Etsy team!
Breaking News: EchoChic is Closing FOR GOOD. TODAY!
Last week we told you that EchoChic was closing its doors at the end of 2008 and clued you in to their amazing everything-must-go sale. This morning, Jennifer emailed in to tell us that so many people took advantage of their great markdowns that they’ve moved the last day to TODAY. They’ve still got Sass and Bide jeans and tops, Nic*Fish jumpers and jewelry by Chandra Wade and Khalid Nasser. Stop by between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. for a bon voyage champagne toast.
EchoChic is Closing …
And they’re having a great sale starting today and running till Dec. 31. Jennifer tells us this is an “everything must go” situation, so we recommend stopping by on the last day of the sale for great deals. (Also: They’ll be doing a champagne toast between noon and 5pm.)
Steampunk’d
I have to admit that I don’t totally understand what it means to be steampunk. I read the article on Wikipedia and I know when a piece of jewelry (like the one above) or hardware can be described as such, but if I had to define it, I couldn’t. But I do like it. Anyway, I stumbled onto Rivkasmom.com, a site featuring very cool and decidedly steampunk jewelry for affordable prices.
