What To Do This Weekend
Ah, the mysterious gods of getting-a-great-tan seem to be smiling upon us this weekend. The forecast predicts lots o’ sunshine and springtime temps that never dip under 75– so happy campers are we, in PW Styleblog Land.
What To Do This Weekend
Dr. Sketchy’s this week: A life-drawing session with roller derby ladies in ’80s gear as models and booze. I am constantly annoyed that my work schedule has never let me go to Dr. Sketchy’s.
Sadly there’s no opening reception for the Jason Sho Green show at Art Star, which opens tomorrow, but it’s definitely worth going to take a look.
Drexel’s engineering department is hosting a human-powered vehicle contest in Fairmount Park, going on all weekend. Saturday is sprint and utility competitions, and Sunday is endurance.

Saturday is also the opening of Fresh Melt Water flagship store in Northern Liberties, and it’s gonna be a big old party from 11am to 11pm sponsored by the glorious trifecta of PBR, Red Bull and Big Dawg BBQ.
What To Do This Weekend
TONIGHT: Smak Parlour’s Pink Birthday Bash
Smak Parlour owners Abby Kessler and Katie Loftus see the world through rose colored glasses. Or at least that’s how seems. The gal pals are such big fans of the color pink, they not only splashed the walls of their Old City boutique with the hue, they also use it to theme their annual birthday celebration. This year’s soiree—the fourth—offers a 20% discount on selected merchandise and plenty of pink-frosted cupcakes and cocktails. And even if pink isn’t your fave, stop by to peep Kessler and Loftus’ new spring line, which includes dresses, tanks and Ts. 6pm.
TOMORROW: Arcadia Denim Brunch
A highlight of the spring fashion season in Philly is eco-friendly boutique Arcadia’s biannual denim brunch. Stop by and receive 25% off all denim purchases—including already reduced items!—while sipping on mangosas and munching on complimentary snacks. There will also be a trunk show featuring merchandise from Ivy Glass. And some words of wisdom to all you vertically challenged shoppers: You can get your jeans hemmed on the spot and for FREE. Noon.
Trunk Show at Art Star
Sure, we’ve already pimped Art Star today, but it’d be shameful to overlook this weekend’s trunk sale. The event features jewelry and wares from Monika Krol. Local fashion designer Nicole Rae Styer will also be on
hand. Styer is known for tricking out her designs with fabric corsages, beads and other small items. She’ll be embellishing on-site on Saturday. Bring your own skirt or shirt and she’ll make it original for just $25. There’ll also be mimosas and munchies courtesy of NoLib’s Soy Cafe, located just across the street from Art Star. Noon.
Kanye West Sneaker Launch at VILLA
Kanye’s new sneaker—amusingly called the Nike Air Yeezy—is being sold exclusively in our area at VILLA (formerly known as Sneaker Villa). The Air Yeezys will be available in three color patterns, each to be released a month apart. The Zen Grey and Light Charcoal painted “Yeezy” will be released this Saturday, while the Black on Black will be in stores in May and the Net/Net (beige) combo in June. Kanye’s kicks will cost $300, which is pretty hefty in our current economic climate. But, hey, we ain’t sayin’ he’s a gold digger.
AAAAAAART STAAAAAAAAAR
Please excuse my dated references, but it is the unfortunate truth that every single time I hear something about the delightful Art Star gallery/craft fair, I have a second where this happens inside my head:
The deadline for submitting for a table at the Art Star Craft Bazaar has been extended until Sunday…
The Art Star Craft Bazaar is an annual juried arts & crafts retail show. We are looking for artists & crafters who create handmade, original work. All mediums are welcome. The event is held outdoors & each participant will get a 10’ x 10’ space, 2 chairs, one 6’ long table, and 1 weekend parking pass. Tents will be available to rent, as well as additional chairs and tables. Participants are required to bring everything else that is needed for set up & display. Up to two artists may share one 10’ x 10’ space, but must apply together & both be accepted. Art organizations & collectives are welcome to apply, but must apply as a group.

Oh! Darling
Jen Corace’s exhibition Clementine, up right now at Art Star, is the featured pick on Philly.com at the moment. Ugh, I was so busy with migraines and my epic case of color geekout that I completely forgot to mention it earlier: go see it before it closes on April 14.
WANT
I was also very excited to see that Jason Sho Green is having another show at Art Star in mid-April! He has this set of Valentine’s Day cards that are pretty awesome:
So I found those a few years back and then found his blog and then just got way too into his other art, which is not as cartoonish but still not quite realistic…
In any event, I’m excited; his new work is very different from the work that initially got me following him, and I still like it. Opening is on April 18. And in case you happened to click the philly.com link, they have Art Star’s old address listed; their new one is 623 N. 2nd St.
Post-Holiday Sale at Art Star
All holiday ornaments and greetings cards are 20% off at Art Star right now. They’re going fast so hop online or head over to NoLibs to stock up for next year.
Tony Franklin’s screenprint on plastic ornament is selling for $9.60, marked down from $12. (Also check out his equally lovely greeting cards.)
Cisco Griffin’s sock puppet greeting cards (there are two more varieties on the shop’s site) were previously marked $6. Buy now for $4.80.
Angel ornament (wood, acrylic and mixed media) by Bear Club Plus was $22. Now available for $17.

Plus: Discounted shopping, complimentary drinks, a fashion show and rotating DJs.
Saturday
